Wesley College (“Wesley”) has 2 full astro turf facilities designed for playing competitive hockey on the College grounds at Ballinteer, Co Dubin. YMCA Hockey Club (“YMCA”) and Wesley have agreed to seek Sports Capital funding to refurbish Wesley’s No 1 pitch with YMCA providing the balance of the estimated €270,000 cost. As part of this application both parties will enter into a 15-year licence agreement which will commence on funding being secured. The parties are targeting to have the No 1 pitch refurbished for 2017/2018 season subject to funding being secured.
YMCA Hockey Club President Peter Chadwick set out the club’s plans to its members at an information meeting and E.G.M on Wednesday the 10th February. He said: “The membership unanimously approved this very exciting development for the club and look forward to seeing it coming to fruition.”
Cllr Josepha Madigan commented: “This is a very important development for the sporting infrastructure in Dublin Rathdown. Hockey is very popular in the area and this will allow many more girls and boys from the community play Hockey. I will be fully supporting the YMCA Hockey Club and Wesley Colleges application for a Sports Capital Grant”
About YMCA Hockey Club
YMCA is currently based at YMCA sports grounds at Claremont Road, Sandymount where the club was founded in 1909. There has always been a strong connection with Wesley with many former pupils joining the club. Hockey grew in Wesley during the tenure of Mr Ken Blackmore (a former Headmaster) who was a prominent YMCA member and hockey international. YMCA currently fields 6 men’s teams (incl. veterans), 2 ladies teams and 7 junior teams involving over 280 playing members in total. It is hoped that the relocation of YMCA to Wesley may lead to a significant increase in membership in all categories.
Hockey at Wesley
There is a long tradition of competitive success in hockey at Wesley and an association with a hockey club will provide access to top quality coaches, opportunities to play club hockey with classmates, and continued engagement when playing with the club on graduation.
