As always is the case with YM, we don’t do things the easy way.
The playoff semi-final vs. Instonians on Saturday opened with a nervy 1st quarter but the intensity picked up in the 2nd. YM picked up 2 goals through Ben Campbell and Thom Ritchie to go into the break leading 2-0. In the 3rd, Jakim Berndsen pulled off some spectacular saves to keep Inst to nil. Grant Glutz won a stroke to start the 4th after being sliced down mid flight into the D. However his resulting stroke went wide and Inst immediately went up the other and scored a short corner. With the score sitting at 2–1 cards started to fly. However YM kept their heads and 2 goals from Jamie Tobin and another from Thom Ritchie secured a 5-1 win.
In the playoff final vs. Bangor, YM came racing out of the blocks and sat 3-0 up at halftime with 2 goals from Ben Campbell and one from Jamie Tobin. In 3rd quarter Bangor got one back before YM replied immediately through Sam Hyland. However what happened in the 4th can only be described as a nightmare. With supporters beginning to celebrate, Bangor got another one back leaving the score at 4-2. Then in the last 5 mins, with Bangor reduced to 9 men at one stage, Bangor somehow found 2 more goals and sent the game to a shootout.
Many of the supporters on the sideline couldn’t watch but YM remained calm having practiced for a shootout all week. Ben Campbell, Grant Glutz and Sam Hyland slotted their chances while Jakim saved 2. This left Andrew Jones with the chance to win it all. With nerves of steel, he drove down the keeper’s right before turning strong, leaving the keeper beached, and firing home! Rauchous celebrations followed which was a mixture of elation ans relief.
The squad were quick to thank all the supporters and everyone who helped in the background over the last few years. This is a weekend that will live long in YM history
