Waz's Weekly Round-up: 5th Dec

By YMCA HC Committee

All the results from this weekend

COI 6-2 YM 1XI 2 (ISC)
After a trip down to Cork, the M1s can be disappointed with a game of two halves.
C of I really took the game to YM early on and before you knew it YM from themselves 2 down in the first 10.
A large number of errors on the ball lead to the score getting away from YM before half time.
Then the game changed, which saw YM with the bulk of possession dominate the game creating a few chances before scoring through Gaby from a corner. The pressure continued for YM and after a number of corners blocked and new corner Grant Glutz converted at the top of the circle.
All in all the score line didn't reflect well and a bad start by Y being rightly punished by the opposition!
Another opportunity vs IHL opposition on Thursday vs Monkstown in the Neville Quarter final will bring more challenges to the ever growing M1s.

YM 2s no game

YM 3s 2 - 1 Avoca
After a great victory the week before against high flying Portrane it was always going to be difficult to replicate. With the usual cry offs on the day, looking at the table this should have been a straight forward game but it was not going to be the case and we came up against a strong and well organised avoca side
Unfortunately we were not organised, and had no shape for the first 25 minutes going 1 down to a break away goal which was very sloppy but no more than we deserved. However YM were creating chances a number to the skipper and MM but they failed to convert.
As the half went on a deflected goal converted by waz from a reverse cross and great work from Alex Kenny. So level going into the break but certainly YM were on top
Second half YM dominated possession early on and a good finish on the reverse from waz nudged them in front. Chances came at both ends and Shane made 3/4 great saves as did the avoca keeper from 3 corners which kept everything tight but no more goals and 3 more points but they were certainly grounded out
A tough away match to finish against a very strong Bray side who we were thrashed 6-1 by in pre season. Thanks to Rupert for umpiring

Monkstown 3 - 3 YM 4s
4s had the late game away against Monkstown, always a difficult fixture. We started the game off well and took the lead off a shot corner. Joe Ambrose scrambling in the rebound. From there we went looking for more and were on top but were pegged back after Monkstown scored a PC that they'd won on the counter attack. From there the game was more even and we went in 2-1 down at the break after a wonder goal finding the top corner from Monkstown.
Going into the 2nd Monkstown got an early third, making use of some slack defending to find the man unmarked on the backpost. However the team didn't fold and fought back hard. With 10mins to go Graham found the bottom corner from a drag flick. Then straight from the tip off we pushed high and after a few phases, won the ball and it ended up going in over the keepers head, 3-3. We chased for more but the wind was taken out of our sails as Cian's head met Óran's shoulder which caused a lengthy injury delay.
It ended 3-3 and what a comeback to earn a point. Great effort by everyone all round. Cian I hope the head isn't too sore this morning!

YM 5s no game

Ladies 1s
Clontarf 2 - YM 0
Yesterday saw the ladies 1s take on clontarf in what ended up being an absolute battle. The first ten minutes didn't see much excitement with clontarf taking the lead from a crash ball into the circle stealing a deflection. They soon made it two through a mixture of turned off defending and luck. YM came out fighting in the second half with much more impressive link up play and were unlucky not to capitalise on their chances fought off be clontarfs strong defence line. Clontarfs physicality saw many YM players being put to ground causing Willis to have words with the ref. However only minutes later Anderson was nearly knocked out cold (wishing her a speedy recovery) forcing her to retire from the game. Bradish gracefully stepped in and YM continued to push forward with their best chance A superb strike from McCardle was ninja-ly stick saved by the goalie off the line. YM leave disappointed but still focusing on the many positives over the last few games. With a free weekend next weekend they aim to pick themselves back up for their mid week match on Wednesday the 14th. Make sure to get down and support !

Ladies 2s
YM 7 - Weston 2
It was a late afternoon cup match for the 2s. With the coaches away in cork , waz stepped in the run the line. The way the game started it looked like it would be a long afternoon for the dragons with Louise making 4 great saves one a double save to keep it 0-0
I always says it takes someone to do something great to change the tempo of a game and a long run from the impressive Karen changed the game entirely and YM just transformed into an attacking force led from a very fit midfield always on the front foot Emma D, Louisa, Aileen, emma Pinchot to a very strong front line of Niamh, Karen and the returning las ' scores goals ' power.
The attacks just kept coming and so did the goals as the score was 5-1 at half time and Weston were cooked. Always difficult to maintain that in the second half but YM always looked threatening and very solid at the back with eimear and Amanda impressing. Must mention 3 colts in the side Caroline, Louise and emma who scored the 7th goal shows the steps the ladies side are making and they have made the step up easily.
So final score 7-2. I haven't seen the 2s in a few weeks but they are a good side and a fit side, if they can keep the goals coming work on the corners promotion is a very achievable task and an important step for the club
Match monday night so try get out and support
