Despite losing out in the first round of the Neville Cup our Mens 1sts have had a positive start to their season with three wins and a draw so far in their league campaign. On behalf of the club I would like to welcome new arrivals Ian McHugh and Allen Dale from Australia and Stephen Parker from Cork CoI and wish them a very successful and enjoyable season with the Club. It is also great to have last years new arrivals Johnny Bruton, Marcus and Dash remaining with the club for their second season.
The 1sts have a number of huge games coming up over the next few weeks with the first round of the Irish Senior Cup away to Annadale this Saturday at 2.30 in Carryduff and the first IHL match away to Lisagarvey next Saturday (Oct 15th).
To round off three weeks of massive games, on Saturday October 29th we will host our first home IHL match of the season in Alex with a crucial 1sts fixture against Annadale. Old Alex Ladies 1sts are also playing a home IHL game that afternoon so it should be a fantastic afternoon of top quality hockey in Milltown. I know Ger and the lads would really appreciate your support so please do your best to come along - and also to the Dropping Well afterwards to help them celebrate (I hope!)
We will be producing a match programme for the event and if you would like to take out advertising in the programme please get in touch for rates (which are very reasonable!). All monies go towards the running of your club!
The 2nd XI have also had a strong start to the season and after 4 games have taken an early lead in Division 3. They have had 3 wins and a loss, including one 11-0 victory. The guys have a day off this Saturday as the 1sts play in the Irish Senior Cup.
In a highly promising start our Mens 3rd XI have won their first two league matches, aided no doubt by a return to action of some of the Clubs former stars. We also have a great bunch of lads coming through from the Junior side of the Club this season which will further strengthen the side. Will they make it three out of three this Saturday when they play away to North Kildare? Let’s hope so!
Having now played three league games - the 4th XI have won one, lost one and drawn one so far - lets hope Graham and the lads can regain their form of last season and get back to the top of Division 6. This sat they play Monkstown 5ths at 3.30 in Claremont Road.
Our 5th (aka 6ths) have yet to play a match this season but are due to kick off this coming Saturday with a home game to Bray 2nds at 2pm. Lets hope they can get a point or three this Saturday.(Or this season even!)
The Ladies side of the Club would like to welcome all of the new players who have joined them this season. Let’s hope they can help us continue our rise up the ranks as it inevitably gets more and more challenging!
The Ladies 1sts started their Division 4 campaign last week by coming from a 3-1 deficit to end up with a 3-3 draw at home to Rathgar, and were unlucky not to get three points in the end - they take on Old Alex 3rds in Alex this coming Saturday in what should be a good test for the side.
Last but not least the Ladies 2nds are playing their first league match this Saturday at home to Botanic 4ths - lets hope the girls can start as they left off last season and keep the points coming in!
Our annual Club dinner will be held this year on Thursday November 24th, yet again in the Bank below the Dropping Well - it will as always be a fantastic night and is central to the fundraising efforts of the Club. We will be holding our traditional auction and would like to offer a smaller number of high quality items this year.
If you have any quality high ticket items that you would be in a position to donate it would be much appreciated- please contact a member of the Committee to discuss. Tickets for the Dinner are yet again €50 and this includes 3 course meal, late bar and a DJ.
The club will be running a Last Man Standing premier league competition (email to follow with full details from Vinno) It is €10 to enter per team with no restrictions on the number of teams entered. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to take part.
If you have yet to pay your subs you have missed out on the early bird and now owe €400 (full member) – this price is set to rise again in November so get it paid as soon as possible!
In Juniors news (Previously known as Colts):
The Under 14 and Under 16 (boys teams) had their first matches of the season and came away with three wins out of three. The U14s beat Pembroke in Serpentine by an impressive 5-0, with Pembroke pegged into their own half for much of the game (great non-stop performances from Finn, Harry and Cian all afternoon, meanwhile our goalie David found it hard to stay awake through no fault of his own!).
In the same venue immediately after, the U16s (including some tired U14s from earlier) played a mini 3-team tournament with Three Rock and Pembroke. The fancied Three Rock side beat Pembroke 3-0, so our U16s went on nervously expecting similar treatment only to turn them over 2-1 and then went on to beat Pembroke by the very same scoreline in the final match of the day. Lots of good performances including the two Andrews, Ivan and Eoin, and easy to see why Ben and Leo are playing at Leinster/Ireland level. Congrats to all, especially to some new members playing their first matches, and a special thanks to Rupert Christie who managed both teams to victory at short notice.
The successful running of our Juniors section is reliant on members of our senior club giving their time to help out – if you are willing to give just a few hours of your time on a Friday evening, Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon please get in touch with Ray Bourke at email@example.com
For anyone who has managed to read to the end of this Newsletter…thanks and good luck this weekend!
