Based in Sandymount, Dublin 4, YMCA Hockey Club could not be more ideally located, see Directions page for more. Our membership is not only drawn from age categories ranging from under 10 to over 50’s, but also from players all around Dublin. Given the proximity of the grounds to the Dart line, and also bus routes to the city centre, it is an extremely accessible location.
Teams for All
With a Mens’ section made up of 6 teams and a Ladies' section made up of 2 teams the Club is geared towards providing an environment where players of all abilities can enjoy hockey. Our Men’s 1st XI have been playing their hockey in Division One of the Leinster Senior League for as long as memory serves and our Ladies, whilst only formed in 2006, have won promotion in each of their first four seasons.
Centenary Year
YMCA Hockey Club celebrated its 100th year in the season 2008/09. It was marked by three key note events: the YMCA Golf Outing in Powerscourt Golf Club in October, the Club’s Annual Dinner in Wanderers Rugby Club in November, and the culmination of the celebrations was the YMCA Centenary Ball in the Hilton Hotel in February 2009. For more on these events, see our Photos page.
History
As result of the requirement to play first team hockey on synthetic surfaces, YMCA Hockey Club ceased to use Claremont Road as its primary home ground in 1991. For 13 years the Club’s primary home ground was Wesley College, Ballinteer, after briefly using Rathdown School and Park Avenue as ‘home’ venues for a season and to this date continues to have a close relationship with the school. In 2004, the Club returned to its natural home ground in Sandymount following the construction of a new Pavilion & Synthetic pitch. In 2009, some Club teams also began to play and train on the water-base pitch at Alexandra College in Milltown.
